With 8 months under my belt, I figured it was time to take a look at the current information related to MarcEdit 7’s usage and uptake. When I took a look in Feb., the current download numbers were somewhere around 13-15,000 (I think). As of today, there are approximately 72,000 unique users making use of MarcEdit 7.x.
Methodology
Using the MarcEdit 7 automatic update logs, I looked at the application code (rather than keeping IPs or user identifying data, I generate a random product GUID that acts an an update code. This way, I have no idea who you are…because, well, I don’t need to know — but I can still capture aggregate usage information related to gross location (country code) and unique user counts). Using this information, I quickly sorted countries so that they would be distinct, and then used the MaxMind free GeoDatabase to take the country codes and turn them into latitudes and longitudes for mapping purposes.
The numbers
A quick look at the information gleaned — while MarcEdit in total (including both 6.x, 7.x, and MacOS versions) shows up in some 190+ countries — MarcEdit 7 currently has users in approximately 150 countries. Its honestly hard to know if these numbers are apples to apples, in part, because I use to use a free service to handle the country resolution and they tended to split up disputed countries into multiple names. A quick snapshot of information:
Usage Numbers:
Top 5 Countries:
- United States
- India
- Canada
- United Kingdom
- Australia
These 5 countries make up ~60% of the application usage. Expanding further…here’s a quick graph of the top 20 countries by usage.
User Map
Finally, what’s all this information good for if you can’t make a map. Here’s a breakdown of each country placed on a google map. For some reason, my maps never show users in Greenland or Iceland. At some point, I’m going to need to find a way to fix that.
