Pixar’s new movie – Up!
What a fantastic movie. I love Pixar movies because I know that I can take the kids and they will enjoy it and there’s a pretty good chance that I’ll like it too. However, after last year’s Wall-E (which I loved), I had pretty high expectations going into the theatre this afternoon when my wife…

OLC MarcEdit Workshop
So, last week (May 20th), I had the opportunity to meet with about 56ish folks in Columbus, OH to talk about MarcEdit. I don’t give MarcEdit workshops very often, though I have always enjoyed doing it when I have. (The main reason I don’t is the time — I simply don’t have the time to…

Weekend at timberline
So over the last weekend (Sat — Mon., May 16-18), I was at Timberline Lodge near Portland, Oregon for the annual Timberline Acquisitions Conference (9th annual anyway). The conference is one that I would generally not attend (what do I know about acquisitions other than you buy things) — but this year I had been…

Happenings…
So, I’ve been a little neglectful keeping up with the blogging due to a number of other outside activities. Over the past couple of months, I’ve done a good deal of writing and publishing. In order, I’ve had the following articles published: LRTS: Reese, T. (2009, April). Automated Metadata Harvesting: Low-Barrier MARC Record Generation from…

MarcEdit version number change coming
Just an FYI — I’m a big believer in incremental builds — hence the reason why MarcEdit’s build number changes so slowly. For example, my current development build number is: 5.1.3393.37654 (actually built today). I personally am not fond of software that make large leaps between build numbers, but I also realize that my incremental…

MarcEdit 5.1 update
Just posted a small update to MarcEdit 5.1. The biggest change is in the Z39.50 client — adding Unicode retrival to the Z39.50 batch tool. However, I’ve also included changes to the Validator, expanded the delete field function, etc. You can find it at: MarcEdit_Setup.msi –TR

MarcEdit 5.1 update
Couple of quick changes. Delete Fields — you can delete multiple fields using “xâ€? syntax, where the ‘x’ is no longer case sensitive. For example: a) 900 — deletes the 900 field b) 90x — deletes fields 900, 901, 902, 903, etc. c) 9xX — deletes fields 900, 901, 902, 903…910, 911…920, 921, etc. Originally,…

An OA mandate for the OSU library faculty
The OSU Library faculty recently adopted an OA mandate, which is pretty cool. You can read about it here: http://ir.library.oregonstate.edu/dspace/handle/1957/10850 and what a few others are saying about it: Peter Suber: http://www.earlham.edu/~peters/fos/2009/03/oa-mandate-for-library-faculty-of-osu.html Steven Harnad: http://openaccess.eprints.org/index.php?/archives/548-Planets-1st-Library-Faculty-Green-OA-Mandate-7th-US-Mandate,-68th-Worldwide.html I think that this is important on a number of levels. Symbolically, it’s important. It’s very difficult for the library…

MarcEdit Update
I just uploaded a new version of MarcEdit 5.1. Most of the updates are related to changes in the MarcEditor. So here’s the list of changes: MarcEdit Find (specifically when the regular expression option is selected) — Previously, when searches were done, items were located but the window didn’t scroll to the located item. That’s…

WorldCat API gem moved to rubyforge
I had mentioned that I’d quickly developed a helper gem for simplifying using the WorldCat API in ruby (at least, it greatly simplifies using the API for my needs). This was created in part for C4L and partly because I’m moving access from Z39.50 to the API when working with LF and I basically wanted…
